We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
