From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein Document Disclosure is Mixed.

Conservative responses to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.

Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric

Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship procedure.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While the former president's name and image appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.

Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release

But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.

“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Campaign Releases Response

Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no new information.
