Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
